What is Sugaring?
Sugaring is an ancient and gentle method of hair removal. Known as “Halawa” in Egypt, it has been used throughout the ages across Middle East, Greece and Northern Africa as a "sweeter" way to get rid of unwanted body hair. Sugaring has been around for centuries. It is an effective alternative to waxing and lasers. Just like the name implies, sugaring is a relaxing and natural method of hair removal.
What is the Sugar Paste?
The sugaring paste is all natural. It is made of sugar, lemon juice and water. As its ingredients are so natural, sugaring is eco-friendly, hypoallergenic and biodegradable. There are no artificial chemicals, resins or other ingredients that wax may contain.
How Does Sugaring Work?
Typically, the sugaring gel is used much like waxing in that it is applied to skin. The ball of sugaring gel is smoothed across the site in the opposite direction of growth and then removed in the direction of hair growth. A significant difference between sugaring and waxing, however, is that the gel does not stick to the skin itself. Whereas waxing can sometimes result in hair breakage and subsequently cause troublesome ingrown hairs, sugaring removes hairs from the follicles themselves. It does not strip live skin cells as sugaring gel sticks only to hair and hair follicles, sugaring pulls less and is less painful. Notably, the sugar gel is rolled or “flicked” off the skin rather than forcefully stripped.
Another tradition or practice that makes sugaring so gentle is that it is not heated like wax. This means there is no heating or burning of the skin. The gel itself is applied at room temperature.
Clean-up is also simpler with sugaring. When the treatment is complete, the sugar simply washes away. No stickiness, no bruised skin, no mess. Sugaring truly is hair removal that is gentle and eco-friendly.
Is Sugaring Sanitary?
Sugaring is very sanitary and eco-friendly too! Sugaring gel is always discarded after each session is finished and is never reused. There is no double-dipping as may happen with wax. The sugaring gel itself is made only from natural ingredients that are gentle on skin and the environment.
Why is Sugaring Such a Great Choice?
Not only is sugaring more gentle, eco-friendly and natural than other methods, because it removes hair from the follicles themselves, clients may find that regrowth is finer and thinner. With continued treatment, clients may find that the hair stops growing back!
Hair removal through sugaring means fewer bumps, less redness and post-treatment discomfort.
How Long Does Sugaring Last?
Applied by an experienced sugarer, clients may find that it may take up to six weeks for hair to return. As mentioned earlier, regular treatments may result in permanent hair loss to the treated area! Time between treatments depends, of course, on hair type. Heather will be able to advise you as to ideal time between visits.
Where Can I Sugar?
Sugaring only needs hair to be 1/8th of an inch in length. This means that just about anywhere that you have unwanted hair can be exfoliated through sugaring. Lips, underarms, legs, arms and bikini areas can all be sugared.
